Pet Portraits From Photographs - Hints and Tips

Pet Portraits from Photographs – How to photograph your pet to get the best image for us to paint from.

  • For a head and shoulders portrait I need a photograph that is in focus with your pet close in the frame.
  • For a full body portrait I need a photograph without cropping off your pet’s ears, paws or tail.
  • Try to provide me with a photograph which shows off your pet’s character and personality.
  • You may need to hold your pet’s favourite toy in front of them to maintain their focus whilst someone else photographs them.
  • Get down to their level and look into their eyes when you take the photograph.
  • Photograph your pet in good light and good weather, preferably outside.
  • If you can, use a tripod to make sure that the photograph is in focus.
  • Avoid digital zoom when using a mobile phone as this distorts the image slightly.
  • Don’t resize the original photographs because this will remove some of the detail.
  • Make sure that the photograph shows your pets eyes as this will help show their character better.
  • Although it helps if you provide more than one good photograph so that we can get a better idea of your pet’s personality, I will only use one photograph to paint from.
  • When emailing your pet’s photograph to me, try to send it with a file size as large as your email account will allow, this ensures we get as much detail into the painting as possible.

All pet portraits from photographs are original paintings by me, they are not imported from the far east or digitally created.
